Julius Caesar as an ESL student

           Image from Wikipedia.org

Gaius Julius Caesar[b] (Classical Latin: [ˈɡaː.i.ʊs ˈjuː.li.ʊs ˈkae̯.sar]; July 100 BC [1] – 15 March 44 BC)[2] was a Roman general, statesman, Consul, and notable author of Latin prose. He played a critical role in the events that led to the demise of the Roman Republic and the rise of the Roman Empire. In 60 BC, Caesar, Crassus, and Pompey formed a political alliance that was to dominate Roman politics for several years. Their attempts to amass power through populist tactics were opposed by the conservative ruling class within the Roman Senate, among them Cato the Younger with the frequent support of Cicero. Caesar's victories in the Gallic Wars, completed by 51 BC, extended Rome's territory to the English Channel and the Rhine. Caesar became the first Roman general to cross both when he built a bridge across the Rhine and conducted the first invasion of Britain.

Student's writing Teacher's comments
First draft:
Come, See, Conker. Don't forget your subjects, Julius.
Who or what did the action?
Second draft:
I come, I see, I conker. Good "S-V" structure, Julius!
Verb Tense: Did this happen in the past?
Third draft:
I came, Iwas see, I did conker. Better, but keep the verb forms parallel.
Also, check your spelling, Julius.
The last word is not correct.
Fourth draft:
I came, I saw, I konkered. Good job with the past tense, Julius.
Spelling hint: The last word needs a "q".
Also, beware of comma splices.
Fifth draft:
I came; I waw, I qonkered. Conquered, Julius! It's "conquered."
Thing of the Latin roots!
You, of all the students, should know this.
What did we learn about semicolons, Julius?
Periods provide a stronger break between ideas.
Sixth draft:
I came, I saw, I conquered. Nice punctuation, but the paragraph is incomplete.
Add details or examples to support your ideas!
Remember what we discussed in class.
Honestly, Julius. How do you ever hope to get ahead with writing like this?
Seventh draft:
           I came, I saw, I conquered.
Enough! I finish! I go home now!
